Horseshoe Bend and Glen Canyon Dam

We drove to Horseshoe Bend Overlook. The Overlook is free but the city of Page owns the parking lot and require a $10/car parking fee. Horseshoe Bend was formed 200 million years ago from sand dunes which became petrified. It is part of the Glen Canyon of the Colorado River with a 270° horseshoe-shaped bend.

The walk down (everything goes down first so you get to walk back up, which is the hardest) was 3/4 mile, so 3/4 mile back up. There is about a 150 feet change in elevation so it is a bit of a slope. They do have 2 small shelters where you can rest. The end of the walk down to the river is worth the walk. It is a beautiful spot looking down at the bend and the boats circling the horseshoe on the river.

Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon Dam are nearby so we went there. The Dam was built in 1956 and was the reason for the creation of the town of Page. The power plant was closed and we were disappointed about that but the dam itself was nice to look at. Lake Powell is a manmade lake with a recreational area. The recreational area has boat launches, picnic areas and camping areas and was all very clean and pretty.
